How to Get to Hargeisa#

Hargeisa is served primarily via Egal International Airport (HGA); some travelers also arrive via Berbera (BBO) then continue by road. There are no rail connections - overland travel is by shared minibus, intercity coach or private car.

By Air

Egal International Airport (HGA): The city’s main airport, about 5-10 km east of downtown Hargeisa. From the terminal you can take a metered or negotiated taxi to the centre in roughly 10-20 minutes; expect around USD 5-15 depending on negotiation and luggage. Some hotels will arrange pickups for a similar fee.

Berbera Airport (BBO): A secondary airport on the Gulf of Aden, roughly 150 km northeast of Hargeisa. Regular passenger flights are limited; most arrivals continue by road. Road transfers from Berbera to Hargeisa take about 2.5-3.5 hours by shared minibus or private car. Shared minibuses typically cost in the USD 10-20 range; private car hires are commonly USD 60-120 for the trip, depending on vehicle and negotiation.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no passenger rail service in Somalia or Somaliland, so trains are not a travel option to or within Hargeisa.

Bus / Shared Minibus: Hargeisa is served by local minibuses (often called dala-dala) and intercity buses that connect to towns such as Berbera, Burao and Borama. Local fares inside Hargeisa are very low (typically under USD 1-2 per short trip); intercity minibuses commonly cost about USD 10-25 depending on distance (for example Hargeisa-Berbera ~USD 10-20) and take from one hour to several hours depending on the route and stops.

How to Get Around Hargeisa#

Hargeisa is easiest to navigate by taxi and shared minibus; for most visitors a combination of hotel-arranged pickups and dala-dala for short hops works best. Use a hired car or private driver when you need flexibility or are travelling between towns, and plan for checkpoints and variable road conditions on longer journeys.

  • Taxis (USD 1-15) - Taxis are the most convenient way to get around Hargeisa, especially at night or with luggage. Fares are typically negotiated rather than metered; short trips inside the city commonly cost a few dollars (USD 1-5). Agree a price before you get in and carry small notes - drivers expect cash and often prefer USD.
  • Shared minibuses (dala-dala) (USD 0.5-25) - Shared minibuses are the cheapest local option for short and medium trips and the main form of public transport between Hargeisa and other Somaliland towns. They run from market areas and informal stops; expect to stand on busy runs. Prices are low (usually USD 0.50-5 for local legs, USD 10-25 for intercity routes) and travel times vary with stops and road conditions.
  • Intercity buses / coaches (USD 5-25) - Several private operators run larger buses between Hargeisa and regional centres (e.g., Burao, Borama, Berbera). Coaches are more comfortable than dala-dala for longer distances and typically depart from city transport hubs or main road junctions. Tickets are inexpensive by international standards but can take longer because of stops and checkpoints.
  • Private car hire / 4x4 (USD 50-120/day) - Hiring a car with a driver or renting a 4x4 is recommended for day trips or travel into rural areas where roads can be rough. Prices vary widely; expect roughly USD 50-120 per day for a vehicle and driver, higher for multi-day or remote itineraries. A local driver is valuable for navigation and security liaison at checkpoints.
  • Airport transfers (USD 5-120) - Many hotels offer paid airport pickups from Egal International Airport; these are slightly more expensive than street taxis but more reliable, especially at night. From HGA to the city centre the transfer is typically 10-20 minutes; negotiated taxi fares are commonly USD 5-15. From Berbera, scheduled road transfers and shared minibuses take about 2.5-3.5 hours to Hargeisa.
  • Walking - Central Hargeisa is compact and walkable for short errands, exploring markets and visiting nearby sites. Pavements can be uneven and shade sparse, so avoid walking in the midday heat and be mindful of traffic; walking is the best way to experience market life and short local trips.

A few higher-end hotels cater to diplomats and business travelers with improved security, comfortable rooms, and conference facilities, though amenities remain limited.
