Roberts International Airport (ROB): Roberts International (ROB) is located in Harbel and is Liberia’s main international airport. Taxis and shared minibuses connect the airport to Monrovia and surrounding towns; a taxi into central Monrovia/Paynesville typically takes 45-75 minutes depending on traffic and costs in the ballpark of USD 30-60. Shared minibuses and airport shuttles are cheaper (single digits to low double-digit USD) but less predictable and may require waiting.
(No other scheduled commercial airports): There are no other major scheduled international airports immediately adjacent to Harbel; most commercial international arrivals use ROB.
Train: Liberia (and Harbel) are not served by passenger rail.
Bus / Minibus: Shared minibuses and commercial buses run routes between Harbel/Roberts International, Kakata, Monrovia and other towns. Buses and shared taxis are inexpensive (a few USD) but slower and less comfortable than private taxis - expect 1-2 hours to Monrovia by public road transport depending on traffic and road conditions.
How to Get Around Harbel#
Harbel’s transport is airport-focused - ROB provides most arrivals, and onward travel is by taxi, shared minibus or private shuttle. For comfort and reliability choose a taxi or pre-booked transfer; public minibuses save money but take longer and are less predictable.
- Airport taxis & private transfers (USD 30-60) - Taxis from ROB are the simplest way into Monrovia or the region; they are quicker and more reliable than public minibuses. Negotiate or use a posted airport rate when possible and expect about 45-75 minutes to Monrovia depending on traffic.
- Shared minibuses / public buses (USD 1-8) - Shared minibuses (often called ‘shared taxis’) and commuter buses link the airport area with Monrovia, Kakata and other towns. They are far cheaper than private taxis but leave when full and can be crowded; travel times are longer due to stops.
- Car hire / private shuttle (USD 50-120/day for rentals; shuttles priced individually) - Pre-booked private shuttles and rental cars are available for more comfortable transfers, especially for groups or if you’re carrying lots of luggage. Road conditions around Monrovia can be variable; choose an operator with local experience.
- Motorbike taxis (short trips) (USD 0.50-3) - In and around smaller towns near Harbel, motorbike taxis are used for very short hops. They are cheap and quick but not suitable for long journeys or large luggage and helmet availability varies.
- Walking - Harbel itself is semi-urban with limited pedestrian infrastructure in some areas; walking is fine for short distances but exercise caution after dark and on busy roads.
