Hampstead Heath
Park Large London parkland with panoramic city views
North London’s Hampstead Heath combines woodlands, meadows and bathing ponds. Visitors walk trails, swim in the bathing ponds and climb Parliament Hill for panoramic views of the city skyline.
Hampstead Heath is a large, historic open space in north London that combines woodland, meadows, ponds and formal gardens. It is a major recreational area for residents and visitors and includes several named attractions such as Parliament Hill and Kenwood House.
The Heath offers extensive walking routes, open meadows for sports and picnics, wooded glades and a collection of freshwater bathing ponds used by swimmers through all seasons. Parliament Hill is a prominent high point with panoramic views across the London skyline, and Kenwood House sits on the northern boundary with an open estate and art displays.
Historically common land used by local communities, the Heath has evolved into a publicly managed green space with layers of landscape change from the 18th century onwards. Management now balances recreation, habitat conservation and heritage features.
The Heath sits north of central London around the Hampstead and Highgate areas, within the London Borough of Camden and adjacent boroughs, and is easily reached from Hampstead village and nearby tube and rail stations.
- Best viewpoint: Parliament Hill provides one of the clearest skyline views of central London from the north and is a favoured time-of-day viewpoint for photographers.
- Outdoor swimming: The Heath contains dedicated bathing ponds popular for outdoor swimming across the year, including a designated swimming area for year-round use.
What to See #
- Parliament Hill: A high grassland and viewpoint on the Heath offering panoramic views across central London and a popular spot for sunrise, sunset and city-skyline photography.
- Hampstead Ponds: A set of bathing ponds and swimming facilities used year-round, separated for mixed, men's and women's bathing at different locations.
- Kenwood House: Kenwood House and its formal grounds located on the northern edge, open to visitors and often included in park visits.
How to Get to Hampstead Heath #
Hampstead Heath sits in north London (London Borough of Camden). By public transport take the London Overground to Hampstead Heath station (Gospel Oak-Barking line) - the heath is a 3-5 minute walk from the station - or take the Northern line to Hampstead tube station (Edgware branch) and walk about 10-15 minutes down Heath Street. Several local buses also serve the area; from central London driving is roughly 5 miles (about 20-40 minutes depending on traffic) via the A400/A41 or by using the North Circular (A406) from the west.
Tips for Visiting Hampstead Heath #
- Visit early on weekday mornings or late afternoons to enjoy quieter stretches of the Heath and clearer views from Parliament Hill before weekend crowds arrive.
- Approach via Hampstead Heath Overground (Hampstead Heath station) if you want the ponds and Parliament Hill, or use Hampstead tube if you prefer the village, Kenwood House and the northern woods - this lets you target the area you want without extra walking.
- Many visitors concentrate on the main ponds and Parliament Hill; take the quieter paths toward Highgate and Golders Hill Park to discover secluded woodland, lesser‑visited viewpoints and the separate Ladies' and Men's bathing ponds.
- If you want a calmer experience, combine a visit with Kenwood House (on the north edge of the Heath) outside peak hours - the house and its grounds are often far less crowded than the central Heath at the same time.
Best Time to Visit Hampstead Heath #
Best visited late spring through early autumn for pleasant weather, open ponds, and lively park atmosphere.
