Hahajima

Hahajima is one of the inhabited islands of the Ogasawara (Bonin) archipelago administered by Tokyo Metropolis and noted for its distinct subtropical ecosystems. The island is recognized for endemic species of plants and animals and is included in the Ogasawara Islands UNESCO World Heritage listing.

Natural attractions include native forests, coastal cliffs, and marine environments that support seabird colonies and unique terrestrial fauna; conservation measures regulate access to sensitive habitats. Small local communities maintain basic visitor facilities while limiting large-scale development to protect the island’s ecology.

The islands were colonized and settled in modern times and have since been managed for conservation as well as local livelihoods; scientific studies and protected-area management address invasive species and habitat preservation. Tourism is controlled and often organized through licensed operators.

Hahajima lies in the Pacific Ocean roughly 1,000 kilometres south of central Tokyo as part of the Ogasawara group, in a remote volcanic island chain administered by Tokyo Metropolis.
