Hagia Irene
Religious Site Byzantine church in Istanbul, preserved as a museum
Hagia Irene sits inside Istanbul’s historic peninsula near Topkapı Palace and serves as a museum and concert space; visitors note its early Byzantine architecture and historical significance.
Hagia Irene (Aya İrini) is a Byzantine-era church located in the outer courtyard of Topkapı Palace in Istanbul. It dates to the early Byzantine period and is dedicated to Saint Irene.
The interior is notable for its vaulted brick-and-mortar architecture and large, relatively austere nave; its setting within the Topkapı grounds makes it an easy stop on a palace visit. The building is often used for concerts and exhibitions due to its acoustics and preserved interior space.
Originally constructed as a Christian church, it remained out of use as a mosque during Ottoman rule and was repurposed for military storage and armory functions. In the 20th century it became part of Turkey’s museum system and has been conserved for visitors and cultural events.
The site sits in the historical peninsula of Istanbul, immediately west of the Hagia Sophia and within the Topkapı Palace complex, a short walk from Sultanahmet Square.
- Location and status: Sits inside the outer grounds of Topkapı Palace and is one of the few Byzantine churches in Istanbul that was not converted into a mosque.
- Uses: Used as an armory and arsenal under the Ottomans and in modern times has been used as a museum and concert venue because of its acoustics.
