Hackescher Markt
Plaza Central Berlin square and transport hub with boutiques
A square and transport hub in central Berlin, edged by cafés, boutiques and nightspots; visitors come for food, nightlife and proximity to Museumsinsel and Hackesche Höfe courtyards.
Hackescher Markt is a public square and surrounding quarter in central Berlin’s Mitte district, adjacent to the S-Bahn line and close to Alexanderplatz. It is a long-established transport node and a focal point for commerce and nightlife in the city.
The area is characterized by cafés, bars, boutiques and cultural venues clustered around the square and the adjacent courtyard complex. The most notable sub-location is the multi-courtyard ensemble known as the Hackesche Höfe, which contains several inner courtyards with shops, galleries and eateries and dates from the early 20th century.
Historically the site developed around the Hackescher Markt railway stop and the urbanization of this part of Berlin in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The quarter experienced significant redevelopment and a revival of commercial and cultural activity after German reunification.
The square sits in Mitte on the eastern side of central Berlin, close to Alexanderplatz and within easy walking distance of the Spree River and major central districts. Public transport connections make it an accessible stop for visitors exploring central Berlin.
- Getting there: Good access from public transport via the S-Bahn station on the Stadtbahn; the area is busiest in evenings and at weekend markets.
- Best time to visit: The Hackesche Höfe courtyards are a focal point for galleries and small independent shops and are easiest to visit during daytime opening hours.
