Habichtswald Nature Park is a protected area in Hesse encompassing parts of the Habichtswald low mountain range west and northwest of the city of Kassel. The park consists chiefly of forested hills, ridgelines and valley landscapes.

Visitors use waymarked trails and forest roads for hiking, cycling and nature observation, with viewpoints on higher ground offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The area includes a mix of beech and mixed woodland typical of central Germany.

The nature park was designated to conserve the Habichtswald’s forested landscapes and to provide regulated public access for recreation and education. It forms part of the regional network of protected areas around Kassel.

Geographically the park lies immediately west and northwest of Kassel in northern Hesse, forming a wooded backdrop to the city and extending across low mountain terrain.

The Habichtswald lies immediately north and west of Kassel. From Kassel Hauptbahnhof take bus lines headed toward Habichtswald/Rothwesten or drive via B3/B83; many trailheads are within a 15-30 minute drive from the city center. There are several car parks at major entrances; check the Naturpark Habichtswald website for specific trailhead access.

• Start from the Wilhelmshöhe/Kassel side to combine the park with Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe if time permits.
• Bring a map - trails fork often and signage can be sparse on minor routes.
• In spring watch for ephemeral wildflowers on the beech‑forest slopes; mosquitos can be thick after rain so pack repellent.
