Haapsalu Castle
Castle Medieval seaside castle and historic Episcopal stronghold
Haapsalu Castle anchors a coastal Estonian town with a 13th‑century episcopal fortress, a waterfront promenade and a laid‑back spa and museum scene that visitors explore on foot.
Haapsalu Castle is a medieval episcopal fortress and cathedral complex in the town of Haapsalu on Estonia’s west coast, originally established in the 13th century.
The site includes a cathedral within the castle precinct, a central courtyard, and substantial defensive walls and towers that enclose much of the historic complex. Visitors can walk the grounds, see the episcopal church, and view displays in the on-site museum focused on local history.
Constructed in the 13th century as the seat of the bishops who governed the surrounding territory, the complex served both religious and defensive roles through the medieval period. Over subsequent centuries parts fell into disuse and were later conserved and adapted for museum use.
The castle sits on the waterfront at Haapsalu on Estonia’s western coast, roughly 100 kilometres southwest of Tallinn by road.
- Museum and preservation: The castle houses a local museum and is one of Estonia's better-preserved medieval episcopal fortresses, making it a compact, visitable historic site.
- Best time to visit: Summer months offer the best access and events, while some interior areas may be closed in winter for conservation.
What to See #
- Cathedral: The cathedral (episcopal church) within the castle precinct, dating to the medieval castle phase and serving as the bishop's church.
- Courtyard and walls: Castle courtyard and defensive walls forming a near-rectangular stronghold with gateways and towers from the medieval period.
- Coastal defences: The waterfront-facing sections of the castle that provided access and defensive outlook over Haapsalu bay.
