Gweta City
City located in Central Botswana
Gweta perches by the scrub where the Makgadikgadi salt pans begin. Travelers come for Kubu Island, Baobab Alley, guided 4x4 salt‑pan drives and the meerkat colonies that cluster on the flats at dawn.
Why Visit Gweta?#
Small Gweta serves as the jumping-off point to the Makgadikgadi Pans and the otherworldly salt flats that dominate northern Botswana. Meerkat-viewing experiences and sunset drives across the pans are signature draws, while the iconic Gweta Baobab offers a sense of place. Clear night skies and sparse, open landscapes make it ideal for stargazing and simple camp-and-guide excursions that emphasize wildlife and silence rather than crowds.

Best Time to Visit Gweta#
Gweta is best during the cool dry season (May-August) when wildlife concentrates and roads are passable. The rainy months green the landscape but can make travel and tracks challenging.
May - August
10°C to 25°C (50°F to 77°F)
Cool dry months offer comfortable days, excellent game viewing as wildlife concentrates at water, dusty tracks and clear skies make outdoor exploring easy.
September - November
25°C to 40°C (77°F to 104°F)
Hot season turns the pans blistering and dusty; wildlife is still visible but days scorch, so mornings and evenings are the only tolerable field times.
December - March
20°C to 33°C (68°F to 91°F)
Rainy months bring lush grass, dramatic thunderstorms and muddy roads; many migratory birds peak but some lodges close and tracks become difficult.
Gweta's climate is classified as Hot Semi-Arid - Hot Semi-Arid climate with hot summers (peaking in October) and mild winters (coldest in July). Temperatures range from 9°C to 37°C. Semi-arid with limited rainfall with a pronounced dry season.

How to Get to Gweta#
Gweta is a small settlement best reached by road from regional hubs such as Maun or Francistown. Flights arrive to those airports, but the final leg is almost always by car, shuttle or shared taxi across long, sometimes rough roads.
Maun Airport (MUB): Maun is the main gateway for northern Botswana and safari traffic. From Maun, Gweta is approximately a 2-3 hour drive (about 160-210 km depending on route); car hire with 4x4 is recommended for comfort and safety - expect rental daily rates to vary widely by operator and typically include off-road-capable vehicles.
Francistown Airport (FRW): Francistown is another regional airport; road travel from Francistown to Gweta takes around 1.5-2.5 hours (roughly 120-180 km) depending on route and conditions. Road transfers and shuttle services operate between major towns but may be infrequent; private transfers are common for visitors.
Train: Botswana Railways runs freight and limited passenger services mainly on major routes; there is no reliable passenger rail service directly serving Gweta for travellers.
Bus / Shared taxis: Intercity minibuses and shared taxis (kombis) run between major towns such as Francistown, Nata and Maun with stops near Gweta (Nata is nearby). Fares are modest (typically a few hundred Botswana pula for longer legs) but schedules are informal - travel times vary with stops and road conditions.
How to Get Around Gweta#
Gweta is best accessed by road after flying into Maun or Francistown; a 4x4 or arranged transfer is the practical choice given unsealed roads and sparse services. Shared minibuses are the budget option but are less predictable.
- 4x4 / Car (rental) (BWP 600-1,500/day (varies widely)) - Hiring a 4x4 is the most practical way to reach and explore around Gweta - roads can be unsealed and conditions vary. Vehicles can be rented in Maun or Francistown; ensure you have sufficient fuel and spares for remote stretches.
- Private transfer / taxi (BWP 800-2,500 (one-way, depending on distance)) - Private transfers from Maun or Francistown are commonly used by tourists and can be arranged through lodges or local operators. They are more expensive than shared options but reliable and door-to-door.
- Shared minibuses / kombis (BWP 50-300) - Local shared minibuses connect regional towns along the main routes; they are the budget option but can be crowded and run to informal timetables. Good for experienced, flexible travellers comfortable with local travel practices.
- Organised tours / safari transfers (Varies (included in tour cost)) - Many visitors arrive as part of organised safari itineraries or use lodge transfers - these are convenient and often include park fees or guides. Book through reputable operators in advance, especially in peak safari season.
- Bicycle / motorbike (BWP 0-300/day (rental varies)) - Short-distance cycling is possible around the settlement, but long distances and heat make this impractical for most visitors. Motorbikes offer more range but fuel availability and road surfaces are considerations.
- Walking - Walking works for local movement within the village and short trails; avoid long walks on main roads due to heat and traffic. Carry water and sun protection at all times.
Where to Stay in Gweta#
Near main road / pans - BWP 200-800/night
Small settlement serving Makgadikgadi Pans visitors; accommodation is primarily camps and basic lodges, often bookable through regional operators or tour operators.
Gweta village / pan access - BWP 350-1,200/night
Mid-range lodges exist but are limited in number and seasonal. Packages combining lodging and guided pan excursions are common.
Private campsites / outskirts - BWP 1,200-3,000+/night
No large luxury resorts in Gweta; upscale travellers usually book private safari-style camps or fly into larger lodges in surrounding districts.
Shopping in Gweta#
There is almost no formal shopping in Gweta beyond small general stores that stock basic supplies. Lodges and camps sometimes sell handcrafted souvenirs or locally made items. For more substantial shopping or specialised goods you’ll need to travel to larger towns like Nata or Maun.
Nightlife in Gweta#
Nightlife is extremely limited. Evenings are mostly spent at your lodge or camp; some accommodations offer small bar areas and organised evening activities. There are no clubs or a bar district - nightlife is informal and lodge‑centred.
