Gwanghwamun
Monument Main historic gate of Seoul's Gyeongbokgung Palace
Gwanghwamun Gate fronts Seoul’s Gyeongbokgung Palace and faces Gwanghwamun Square with statues and civic monuments. Tourists come for the central gate, guard-change ceremonies and access to palatial grounds.
Gwanghwamun is the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace in central Seoul and a historic landmark dating to the founding of the Joseon dynasty in the late 14th century. The gate has been rebuilt and restored several times and serves as the principal ceremonial entrance to the palace.
The gate is a prominent architectural symbol of Seoul and is frequently photographed from the broad Sejongno avenue that leads south from the gate. Adjacent public spaces include memorial statues and Gwanghwamun Plaza, which host civic events and commemorations.
Originally constructed during the founding of the Joseon dynasty in the late 1300s, the gate has been destroyed, moved and reconstructed across several centuries, including major 20th- and 21st-century restorations. Recent restoration efforts returned the gate to a configuration closer to its traditional appearance.
Situated in Jongno District, the gate sits at the northern end of Sejongno in central Seoul, immediately north of the main palace grounds of Gyeongbokgung.
- Ceremonial events: Ceremonial guard-changing and other cultural events are staged at the gate and on the adjacent plaza at scheduled times throughout the year.
- Central location: The gate stands at the northern end of Sejongno and serves as the main entrance to Gyeongbokgung Palace, making it central to palace access and sightlines in central Seoul.
