Gwanaksan rises south of Seoul with granite crags, forested trails and temple sites. Hikers come for steep routes, exposed rock sections, city vistas from the summit and nearby university campuses that skirt the mountain.
Gwanaksan is a mountain on the southern edge of Seoul and extending into Gyeonggi Province, with a summit elevation of about 632 metres. It is a prominent urban mountain known for hiking and rock outcrops.
The mountain has multiple well-used hiking trails of varying difficulty, rock-climbing sections and several viewpoints that look over Seoul and surrounding suburbs. Trailheads are accessible from districts of southern Seoul and adjacent cities, making it a popular city-adjacent outdoor destination.
Gwanaksan has long been part of the regional landscape and contains historic mountain routes and small hermitages; it now functions primarily as a public recreation and hiking area. Trails and access points were developed to accommodate the large numbers of daily hikers.
The mountain sits on the border of southern Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, south of central Seoul and near the campuses and suburbs on the city’s southern perimeter.
