How to Get to Gunungsitoli#
Gunungsitoli (Nias Island) is reached either by a short domestic flight into Binaka Airport or by a longer combined bus-and-ferry trip from Sumatra’s west coast. Flights from Medan are the fastest and most practical option for most visitors.
Binaka Airport (GNS) - Gunungsitoli: The main airport on Nias Island serving Gunungsitoli (Binaka/Gunungsitoli Airport). Domestic flights operate from Medan (Kualanamu, KNO) and other regional hubs; flight time from Medan is about 30-60 minutes and fares vary by operator.
Medan Kualanamu International Airport (KNO): For most international arrivals fly into Medan and either take a connecting domestic flight to Binaka (GNS) or travel by road/ferry via Sibolga and the western coast of Sumatra.
Train: There are no direct train services to Nias Island; rail travel ends on Sumatra’s mainland (Medan) and you must continue by air or sea.
Bus / ferry: Overland plus ferry via Sibolga is an alternative: buses from Medan to Sibolga (several hours) then a ferry to Nias. Travel times are long and schedules can be irregular-check local operators in advance.
How to Get Around Gunungsitoli#
For Gunungsitoli, a domestic flight to Binaka is the fastest and most practical approach; ferries are a lower-cost alternative but require more time and planning. On the island, ojeks, shared minivans and hired cars provide most local mobility.
- Domestic flight (to Binaka/GNS) (IDR 300,000-IDR 1,200,000 (varies by season)) - Short domestic flights from Medan Kualanamu to Binaka (Gunungsitoli) are the quickest way to reach the island. Check schedules and book early, as frequencies can be limited and subject to seasonal changes.
- Ferry (from Sibolga) (IDR 50,000-IDR 200,000) - Ferry services link Sibolga on the Sumatran mainland with ports on Nias Island. Ferries are cheaper than air but much slower and subject to weather-confirm schedules ahead of travel.
- Local taxi / ojek (IDR 10,000-IDR 200,000) - Taxis and motorcycle taxis (ojek) are the primary local transport modes for short distances and transfers from the airport or port. Use reputable drivers and agree fares in advance or use an app where available.
- Shared minivan / angkot (IDR 2,000-IDR 50,000) - Shared minivans and public minibuses serve inter-village routes and the main town. They are cheap and frequent for local travel but can be crowded and slow.
- Car hire / private driver (IDR 300,000+ per day) - Hiring a car with driver is useful for island tours and visiting coastal villages; prices vary with distance and negotiating skills but offer flexibility for remote sites.
- Walking - Gunungsitoli town is compact and many local markets and services are walkable; walking is the best way to explore neighbourhoods and nearby beaches.
