Gunung Karang is volcanic in origin and forms part of the high ground of western Java. Its slopes are covered by mixed forest and agricultural land at lower elevations.

Gunung Karang lies in western Banten province, roughly 2-3 hours by road from central Jakarta depending on traffic. The usual approach is by private car or shuttle toward Pandeglang or Serang; ask to be dropped at the common trailheads near villages on the mountain’s southern slopes. From Serang the drive is about 60-90 minutes; from Pandeglang village parking is typically a 15-60 minute walk to the formal trailhead.
