How to Get to Gunpo
Gunpo is a satellite city in Gyeonggi Province just south of Seoul; the nearest international airports are Incheon (ICN) and Gimpo (GMP). Rail access is straightforward via Korail/Seoul Metro - the main local stations are Gunpo Station (Line 1/Korail) and Sanbon Station (Line 4).
Incheon International Airport (ICN): The fastest public-transport option is the Airport Railroad (AREX) to Seoul Station - the non-stop Express service takes about 43 minutes (adult fare ~9,500 KRW) and the all-stop train to Seoul Station takes roughly 50-60 minutes (fare ~4,150 KRW). From Seoul Station you can transfer to Seoul Subway Line 1 (toward Anyang/Suwon) to reach Gunpo Station (~35-45 minutes, Seoul Metro fare applies) or take Line 4 toward Sanbon Station depending on your destination in Gunpo.
Gimpo International Airport (GMP): Gimpo is much closer to Gunpo; you can take AREX/all-stop trains or Seoul Metro (Line 9/Line 5 interchange options) into central Seoul and then transfer onto Line 1 (to Gunpo Station) or Line 4 (to Sanbon Station). Total door-to-door travel time to central Gunpo is typically 40-60 minutes depending on connections; combine the airport-rail fare with the Seoul metro fare (see subway fares).
Train: Gunpo is served by Seoul Metropolitan Subway lines - Gunpo Station on Korail/Line 1 (Gyeongbu/commuter services) and Sanbon Station on Seoul Subway Line 4 are the two main rail access points. From Seoul Station expect roughly 35-45 minutes to Gunpo Station (single-ride Seoul Metro/Korail fare applies - standard Seoul base fare around 1,350 KRW; distance surcharges may apply).
Bus: Gunpo has a local intercity/express bus terminal (Gunpo Intercity Bus Terminal / 군포시외버스터미널) and an extensive city-bus network serving nearby cities and neighbourhoods. Local city buses typically charge about 1,200-1,500 KRW per ride; intercity routes to nearby Gyeonggi towns or Seoul terminals commonly cost from ~3,000 KRW up to ~8,000 KRW depending on distance and service.
How to Get Around Gunpo
Gunpo is easiest to navigate by subway and local buses - use Line 1 (Gunpo Station) or Line 4 (Sanbon Station) depending on your destination. For most visitors, subway + short taxi rides gives the best balance of cost and convenience; walking works well within the Sanbon commercial area.
- Seoul Subway (Line 1 & Line 4) (~1,350-2,000 KRW) - The subway is the most reliable way to reach and move around Gunpo - Line 1 serves Gunpo Station while Line 4 serves Sanbon Station in the city centre. Trains are frequent during the day; use a T-money card for transfers and discounted fares. This is the best option for predictable travel times and access to central Seoul.
- Korail commuter trains (~1,350-3,000 KRW) - Korail runs commuter services through Gunpo on the Gyeongbu/Line 1 corridor; these are useful for longer regional hops and connections to national rail. Trains are comfortable and punctual; check Korail timetables for exact stopping patterns since some services skip smaller stations. Use Korail app or station kiosks to buy tickets if you need reserved services.
- City & Intercity Buses (Local: 1,200-1,500 KRW; Intercity: ~3,000-8,000 KRW) - Gunpo's city buses cover neighbourhoods and connect to neighbouring cities; local routes are frequent in Sanbon and around major stations. Intercity buses from the Gunpo Intercity Bus Terminal link to other Gyeonggi towns and Seoul terminals - fares vary by distance. Have a T-money card for easy boarding and transfer discounts.
- Airport rail & limousine bus (AREX Express: ~9,500 KRW; AREX all-stop: ~4,150 KRW; Limousine: ~10,000-15,000 KRW (route-dependent)) - From the airports the AREX trains and airport limousine buses are the main choices. AREX runs to Seoul Station (Express ~43 minutes, All-stop ~50-60 minutes) where you can transfer to Line 1 or Line 4; limousine buses run direct to many Gyeonggi destinations and can be more convenient with luggage. Choose AREX for speed to Seoul, limousine for fewer transfers with luggage.
- Taxis (Base fare ~3,800 KRW + distance/time) - Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive by many international standards and are useful for late-night travel or door-to-door trips within Gunpo. Metered fares start with a base (regular taxi) and add distance/time; app taxis (Kakao T) are widely used and accept cards. Expect higher costs for long trips toward central Seoul during peak times.
- Walking - Sanbon-dong (the city's main commercial area) is compact and very walkable - most shops, restaurants and markets are clustered around Sanbon and Gunpo stations. Walking is often the quickest way to get between nearby neighbourhoods and discover local eateries; wear comfortable shoes for hilly streets.
