Gullfoss
Waterfall Powerful two-tier waterfall on the Hvítá River
A powerful two-tiered waterfall on the Hvítá river, Gullfoss sits along Iceland’s Golden Circle. Visitors follow marked paths and viewing platforms to watch immense flow and photograph the canyon it has carved.
Gullfoss is a major two-tiered waterfall on the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland, celebrated for its considerable drop and the deep canyon into which it falls. It is one of the core attractions on Iceland’s popular Golden Circle route.
The waterfall descends in two main stages with a total drop of about 32 metres, and powerful flows push water into a narrow, rugged canyon that can be viewed from multiple platforms. The site has well-constructed paths and terraces that let visitors see the falls from above and at canyon level.
Seasonal river flow affects appearance - spring and early summer melt increase volume - and walkers use the marked trails around the gorge to reach different viewpoints. A visitor centre and marked parking area serve the site during the tourist season.
Gullfoss has been a known landscape feature for centuries and became a focal point of early Icelandic conservation efforts in the 20th century; it was never industrially developed and is protected as a natural monument. Infrastructure for visitors has been added to manage access and safety.
The falls lie in southwest Iceland on the Hvítá river, inland from the south coast and commonly visited on day trips from Reykjavík as part of the Golden Circle. The surrounding terrain is open and volcanic, with short access paths from the parking area.
- Dimensions and route: The falls drop in two main stages totaling about 32 metres - roughly 11 metres for the upper tier and 21 metres for the lower tier - and are on the Golden Circle tourist route from Reykjavík.
What to See #
- Viewing platforms: Upper and lower viewing platforms provide distinct perspectives of the falls: the upper terrace shows the river narrowing above the first drop, while the lower viewpoint looks into the gorge and the main cascade.
- River and canyon: The waterfall sits on the Hvítá river where it plunges in two stages, forming a deep, narrow canyon downstream of the falls.
How to Get to Gullfoss #
Gullfoss is about 90 minutes’ drive from Reykjavík along Route 1 and Route 35 (the Golden Circle). The site is well signed from the main road; there is a visitor centre with parking. Many day tours from Reykjavík include Gullfoss as part of the Golden Circle loop.
Tips for Visiting Gullfoss #
- Arrive early morning to hear the falls without the tour-bus chatter; the light is best around mid-morning on sunny days.
- Walk the short downstream path to see different angles - the mist often catches rainbows when sunlight is strong.
- Combine Gullfoss with the Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir as part of a Golden Circle day trip.
Best Time to Visit Gullfoss #
Summer offers easiest access and long daylight; winter provides more drama in the ice but requires careful driving and weather checks.
