Gulf Islands
Islands Archipelago in Strait of Georgia with marine parks
Scattered between Vancouver Island and the mainland, the Gulf Islands draw kayakers, cyclists and art-lovers who island-hop between Salt Spring, Galiano and others, stopping for beaches, local markets, wineries and quiet coastal trails.
The Gulf Islands are an archipelago of more than 200 islands and islets in the Strait of Georgia between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland, noted for a mix of small communities, protected shorelines and recreational boating.
Recreational highlights include kayaking between islands, cycling and walking routes on the larger islands, artisan markets and village centres such as those in Salt Spring Island. Ferry links and private boat services connect the islands to terminals at Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.
Parts of the archipelago are protected within the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, which safeguards shoreline and marine habitats and offers campsites, short trails and launch points. Many islands host small seasonal populations and local galleries, farms and markets.
The islands sit in the Strait of Georgia off southern Vancouver Island; principal ferry routes run from the Lower Mainland (Tsawwassen) and from the Victoria area (Swartz Bay) to several major islands.
