Guayabo National Monument
Archaeological Site Pre-Columbian archaeological site with ancient stone structures
Costa Rica’s Guayabo National Monument preserves pre‑Columbian stone mounds, causeways and aqueduct remains amid forest. Visitors walk shaded trails, study early engineering and watch for wildlife.
Guayabo National Monument is a protected pre-Columbian archaeological site in Cartago Province, Costa Rica, and is the country’s largest known ancient settlement. It was declared a national monument in the 20th century and preserves extensive stone and earthworks.
The site contains stone foundations, raised causeways, aqueduct-style channels, carved stone columns and numerous mounded structures laid out across the park; trails link the principal concentrations of remains over roughly a few hectares. An on-site museum displays finds and explains the stratigraphy and layout; a short loop trail and viewpoints make the principal features easy to reach.
Excavations and study have shown long-term occupation and construction by pre-Columbian communities; the site’s visible remains represent phases of planning and monument building over centuries before European contact. The modern monument was established to protect and display these ruins and to provide archaeological interpretation for visitors.
Guayabo sits inland near the town of Turrialba in central Cartago Province, roughly to the east of the Central Valley and within driving distance of San José. The site occupies hilly terrain with forested surroundings and is reached by local roads from nearby towns.
- Significance: The site is the largest pre-Columbian archaeological complex in Costa Rica and is protected as a national monument.
- Access: Paths and raised wooden walkways lead between exposed foundations and earth mounds, making most of the main features accessible on a short loop trail.
What to See #
- Visitor Centre and Museum: Contains a small on-site museum with interpretive displays and artifacts recovered from excavations, serving as the main visitor facility.
- Main Archaeological Complex: An area of visible stone foundations, raised causeways and carved stone columns that form the main archaeological ensemble and trails through the site.
