Guadalupe Mountains National Park protects a rugged mountain range in western Texas and includes the state’s highest summit, Guadalupe Peak, at 8,751 feet (2,667 metres). The park conserves desert and montane landscapes and notable geological exposures.

Hiking is the primary activity, with trails ranging from short canyon walks to the strenuous climb to Guadalupe Peak. McKittrick Canyon is a popular destination, known for its seasonal fall colour and a mix of riparian vegetation within an otherwise arid landscape.

The area was set aside to protect both natural and geological features of the Guadalupe Mountains and to provide public access for recreation and scientific study. Over time the park has become recognised for its fossil reef exposures and biological diversity across elevation zones.

The park sits in far-west Texas near the New Mexico border; it is east of Carlsbad Caverns National Park and accessed via park entrances such as Pine Springs.

  • Highest point in Texas: Contains the highest point in Texas, Guadalupe Peak at 8,751 ft (2,667 m), reached by a steep but well-defined summit trail.
  • Permian reef exposures: The park protects extensive exposures of an ancient Permian reef and associated fossil-bearing rock formations important for geology and paleontology.
