The Grottoes of Catullus are the ruins of a large Roman villa at the tip of the Sirmione peninsula on Lake Garda, dating to the late 1st century BC and early 1st century AD.

Built in the late Republican to early Imperial era, the complex belonged to an elite Roman owner; later writers associated it with the poet Gaius Valerius Catullus, giving the site its modern name. The ruins have been subject to archaeological study and conservation since the 19th century.

Situated at the end of the Sirmione peninsula on Lake Garda in Lombardy, the site occupies a prominent lakeside position accessible from the town of Sirmione.

• Date and name note: The complex dates to the late 1st century BC and early 1st century AD and is commonly associated in name with the poet Catullus, though that link is traditional rather than documentary.
• Best time to visit: Best light for photographing the ruins is in the morning or late afternoon when low sun highlights the stonework and the villas’ lakeside setting.

What to See#

• Villa ruins (main complex): Extensive ruins of a large Roman villa located at the tip of the Sirmione peninsula, showing foundations, wall fragments and terraces from the late Republican to early Imperial period.
• Bathing and service areas: Remains interpreted as thermal installations and service areas are visible lower on the site, indicating the villa included bathing facilities typical of elite Roman residences.
• Archaeological park and viewpoints: An archaeological park layout allows visitors to walk among the ruins and view the villa’s waterfront position on Lake Garda from elevated terraces.

Sirmione is on the southern shore of Lake Garda. From Verona or Brescia take regional trains to Desenzano del Garda or Peschiera del Garda and then a local bus (ATS) or taxi to Sirmione (about 15-20 minutes). The archaeological park is at the tip of the peninsula, within walking distance of the historic centre and port.

• Walk the cliff-top paths before going down to the ruins - the view across the southern end of Lake Garda frames the Roman villa in a way photos rarely capture.
• Time the visit to late afternoon for slanting light that brings out mortar lines and the texture of mosaic panels.
• Combine the visit with a short stop in Sirmione's old town - the peninsula is compact but the streets can be crowded at midday.
