From Bihać or Bosanska Krupa, drive local roads toward the villages on Grmeč’s slopes (road signage to Bosanski Petrovac / Mrkonjić Grad depending on approach). The mountain is approximately 20-40 km from both Bihać and Bosanska Krupa; public transport is limited, so hiring a car or taxi from these towns is the practical option.
Tips for Visiting Grmeč
- If visiting the summit ridge, plan for early morning to avoid the infamous afternoon winds that sweep Grmeč's plateaus.
- Bring a detailed map and GPS: several wartime trenches and memorials are unmarked and the terrain is deceptively maze-like.
- When passing small villages on the mountain's slopes, ask for locally made rakija or smoked cheese - the region's hospitality is the human highlight.
