Gremi

Gremi is a historic fortified royal complex in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia, notable for its 16th-century citadel and the stone Church of the Archangels. It was an administrative and royal centre for the Kakheti kingdom in the early modern period.

The site comprises a hilltop citadel and a principal church constructed in the 1500s, together with associated defensive works and a small museum that displays archaeological finds and information on local history. Gremi’s architecture and layout reflect its role as a regional capital during the 16th century.

The complex declined after Persian incursions in the early 17th century and later periods of political change, leaving the hilltop ensemble that survives today as an archaeological and visitor site. It is commonly visited as part of tours of Kakheti’s historic towns and vineyards.

Gremi sits on a hill overlooking the Alazani Valley in eastern Kakheti, eastern Georgia, in a rural wine-producing landscape roughly a couple of hours’ drive east of Tbilisi.
