Spetses is a Greek island in the Saronic Gulf off the Peloponnese coast, administratively part of the Attica region. It is known for a strong maritime tradition, historic mansions and a compact main town built around a sheltered harbor.

The island’s harborside quarters and pedestrianized lanes make its seafront the focal point for visitors, with waterfront restaurants and preserved 18th and 19th century houses. Several beaches are located a short distance from the town and the island offers coastal walking routes and short drives to quieter bays.

Spetses is historically notable for its naval contribution during the Greek War of Independence and for local maritime families who amassed wealth in the Ottoman and early modern periods. The island preserves several small museums and historic houses connected to that past.

Located close to the northeastern Peloponnese, Spetses is accessible by regular ferry services from nearby ports on the mainland and from other Saronic islands.

  • Historical figure: The island played a notable naval role in the Greek War of Independence and is associated with the naval heroine Laskarina Bouboulina.
  • Transport note: Vehicle access on the island is limited in the main town, making walking, bicycles and small mopeds the typical ways to get around.

What to See #

  • Chora (Spetses Town): The main town and harbor area where mansions and waterfront cafes line the quay and ferries arrive from the mainland.
  • Dapia and old harbor: A preserved captain's district of historic stone houses and narrow lanes that reflect the island's maritime past.
  • Bouboulina Museum: A small maritime museum housed in a historic building containing exhibits on local shipowners and naval history from the 18th and 19th centuries.
