Great Temple of the Aten
Archaeological Site Ancient Egyptian temple dedicated to the sun god Aten
On Amarna’s plain in Minya Governorate, the Great Temple of the Aten lies among the ruins of Akhenaten’s capital; visitors come for open‑air archaeology and Amarna‑period foundations.
Great Temple of the Aten is the principal open-air sanctuary for the sun-disk god Aten at the ancient Egyptian capital of Akhetaten (modern Tell el-Amarna) in Minya Governorate. It was constructed in the 14th century BCE under Pharaoh Akhenaten and served as the focal point for Aten worship.
The site comprises expansive orthogonal courtyards and processional approaches rather than a traditional enclosed hypostyle hall, reflecting the Aten cult’s emphasis on open-air solar rites. Excavations have revealed mudbrick foundations, stone pavements, and altar platforms that define the temple’s ceremonial axes and enclosures.
Akhenaten established Akhetaten as a new capital dedicated to Aten and built the Great Temple as part of a broader urban and religious program that diverged from traditional Egyptian temple typologies. After Akhenaten’s reign the city and its temples were abandoned and many stone elements were removed or reused elsewhere.
The temple complex lies within the archaeological site of Tell el-Amarna on the east bank of the Nile in Minya Governorate. It is part of the wider ruins of the city of Akhetaten and is visited from the modern site area where excavated foundations and cleared courtyard outlines are visible.
- Builder and date: Built by Pharaoh Akhenaten in the 14th century BCE as the principal temple to the sun-disk god Aten in his new capital, Akhetaten (modern Tell el-Amarna).
- What remains today: Archaeological remains are largely foundation walls, courtyards, and stone pavements that outline the open-air ceremonial spaces rather than a roofed temple building.
What to See #
- Great Temple (main sanctuary): The main open-air sanctuary constructed in the capital city of Akhetaten, marked by broad courtyards and axial processional routes aligned for solar cult rituals.
- Small Temple of Aten: A smaller precinct used for daily royal and cultic activities associated with the Aten, located within the city complex at Amarna and situated separately from the Great Temple.
