Great Sphinx of Giza
Monument Massive limestone statue with human head and lion body
Beside the Giza pyramids the Great Sphinx is a limestone statue with a human head and lion body facing east; visitors come for scale, nearby pyramids, and guided Egyptological context.
Great Sphinx of Giza is a monumental limestone statue with a human head on a lion’s body located on the Giza Plateau beside the pyramids. It is commonly attributed to the reign of Pharaoh Khafre in the Old Kingdom, around the mid-3rd millennium BCE.
The Sphinx was carved from the bedrock and sits immediately east of Khafre’s pyramid, forming part of the funerary complex on the plateau. Its face has been subject to erosion and restoration over millennia; the monument has undergone numerous conservation campaigns since antiquity.
The structure is one of the most recognisable ancient monuments in the world and is visited together with the nearby pyramids and cemeteries on the Giza Plateau.
The Sphinx stands on the Giza Plateau on the western edge of Greater Cairo, adjacent to the three large pyramids and the ancient funerary complexes that surround them.
- Dimensions: Carved from the natural limestone of the Giza Plateau, the monument measures roughly 73 metres from paw to tail and about 20 metres in height, making it one of the largest single-stone statues in the world.
How to Get to Great Sphinx of Giza #
The Great Sphinx of Giza is on the Giza Plateau adjacent to the Giza pyramids west of central Cairo. By car or taxi follow the signs to the Giza Pyramids (Al-Ahram Road leads toward the plateau); from downtown Cairo the drive is typically around 20-40 minutes depending on traffic (roughly 20 km). Public minibuses and longer-distance buses also serve Giza.
There is a main visitor entrance to the plateau with parking; expect an additional 10-20 minute walk across the plateau from the entrance/parking area to reach the Sphinx viewing area.
Tips for Visiting Great Sphinx of Giza #
- Plan your visit for sunrise or late afternoon for the best light and to avoid the bulk of daytime tour buses and heat; the plateau is much quieter at those times for unobstructed photos.
- View the Sphinx from the designated fenced platforms-access to the monument itself is restricted, so use the plateau viewpoints for framed shots with the pyramids behind.
- Combine the stop with nearby sites on the Giza Plateau (the Solar Boat Museum near Khufu's pyramid is often less crowded) so you don't treat the Sphinx as a rushed quick photo stop.
