Great Salt Lake

Lake Large saline lake and bird migration stopover

Utah’s Great Salt Lake, a saline remnant of prehistoric Lake Bonneville, borders Antelope Island State Park and supports large migratory bird populations. Visitors sail, kayak and explore shoreline salt flats.

Main image

The Great Salt Lake is a large, shallow saline lake in northern Utah, notable for its high salinity and widely fluctuating water levels. It is a remnant of the Pleistocene Lake Bonneville and is a defining geographic feature of the region.

The lake’s high salinity creates buoyant water and distinct mineral beaches; islands such as Antelope Island offer trails, wildlife viewing and historic sites. Birdlife is concentrated on the lake and its wetlands, making it important for migratory species.

Cultural and art landmarks around the lake include land art such as the Spiral Jetty, while marinas and state parks provide public access for boating and recreation.

The Great Salt Lake is the remnant of much larger prehistoric Lake Bonneville; over the Holocene its extent has varied significantly with climate changes. Human use has included transport, mining of salts and modern recreation.

Situated in northern Utah, the lake lies northwest of Salt Lake City, approximately 20 to 30 kilometres from the downtown area depending on the shore point.

  • Variable area: Surface area is highly variable because the lake is endorheic and saline, commonly cited as ranging from about 1,700 to 6,100 square kilometres depending on water level.
  • Wildlife and recreation: The lake is a major staging area for migratory birds and supports recreational activities such as sailing, birdwatching and visits to Antelope Island State Park.

What to See #

  • Antelope Island: A large island within the lake that is a state park, home to a free-roaming bison herd and offering trails and campsites.
  • Spiral Jetty: An earthwork spiral sculpture created in 1970 on the lake shore that is a notable land-art installation.

How to Get to Great Salt Lake #

The Great Salt Lake is accessible from Salt Lake City (roughly 25-45 minutes by car depending on destination). Antelope Island State Park is reached via the causeway from Syracuse (take I‑15 north from Salt Lake City and follow local signs). For western shores and Saltair historical sites, use SR‑209/Salty access roads off I‑15 and local connectors.

Tips for Visiting Great Salt Lake #

  • Visit Antelope Island (state park) at sunrise for mirror-calm water and better chances of spotting bison and antelope.
  • Avoid the shore nearest Saltair on windy days - strong gusts whip salt spray and can make walking uncomfortable.
  • Brine shrimp and salt crystals make the lake buoyant in shallow parts, but never rely on that for safety - heed signage and stick to marked areas.
