Great Mosque of Sanaa
Mosque Ancient Yemeni mosque at Sana'a's old city
In old Sanaa, the Great Mosque dates back over a millennium and shows layered architectural phases and tall minarets. Pilgrims and visitors study its carved mihrab, courtyard and historic inscriptions.
The Great Mosque of Sanaa is the principal historic mosque in the Old City of Sana’a and is regarded as one of Yemen’s oldest and most important Islamic religious sites. The building contains a large courtyard and an expansive hypostyle prayer hall and has been a central place of congregational worship for many centuries.
Architectural features include decorated facades, tall minaret elements and successive layers of repair and rebuilding that reflect the mosque’s long history. The mosque’s scale and location within the dense urban fabric of the Old City make it a focal point of Sana’a’s historic quarter.
The site has medieval and early Islamic origins and has undergone numerous alterations and restorations over time, so the present building contains elements from different periods. The mosque is closely connected to the Old City’s cultural heritage and to the broader history of Islam in the Arabian Peninsula.
The Great Mosque sits in the heart of Sanaa’s Old City in the Amanat al Asimah governorate; because of ongoing conflict and conservation concerns, visitor access and the condition of the surrounding area can change, and up-to-date local information should be consulted before travel.
- UNESCO Old City setting: The mosque is located in Sanaa's Old City, which is a UNESCO World Heritage area; the mosque itself has roots in the early Islamic period and has been rebuilt and altered over centuries.
- Access and safety: Access and visiting conditions can be affected by local security and conservation issues, so checking current local advice is important before planning a visit.
