The Great Mosque of Salé is the main historic congregational mosque in the city of Salé, across the Bouregreg from Rabat in Morocco. The site dates back to the medieval period and has been rebuilt and repaired over centuries.
The mosque is notable for its large prayer courtyard and an imposing minaret that figures in the old city skyline. Visitors typically view the exterior and the surrounding medina; non-Muslim access to the interior is restricted at many times.
The mosque originated in the medieval era and has undergone multiple restorations and reconstructions reflecting different Moroccan dynasties. It has long functioned as the central Friday mosque for the city of Salé.
Sited in the old city of Salé on the Bouregreg riverbank, the mosque is immediately north of Rabat and easily reached from the Rabat-Salé metropolitan area.

How to Get to Great Mosque of Salé #
Salé sits directly across the Bou Regreg from Rabat. From Rabat-Ville train station, take a taxi (10-15 minutes) across the Hassan II bridge into Salé’s medina. From Rabat Agdal station one can also take tram line T1 to the city center and then a short taxi. The mosque is within walking distance once inside Salé’s medina; ask a local for the Grande Mosquée (often simply called la grande mosquée).
