Great Mosque of Kilwa
Mosque Ruined medieval mosque on Kilwa Kisiwani, UNESCO site
Visitors come to the Great Mosque on Kilwa Kisiwani to examine coral-stone ruins and Swahili coast archaeology at a UNESCO World Heritage island settlement.
The Great Mosque of Kilwa is a large coral-stone mosque complex on Kilwa Kisiwani island off the coast of present-day Tanzania. It forms one of the principal monuments of the medieval Swahili town and is part of the Kilwa Kisiwani archaeological ensemble.
The site presents extensive stone foundations, courtyard areas and masonry remains of a multi-phase mosque complex built of local coral rag. Archaeological remains illustrate plan elements of prayer spaces and associated structures and are visited as part of the broader Kilwa Kisiwani ruins.
The mosque draws interest for its architectural use of coral-stone construction and for the role Kilwa played in Indian Ocean trade networks during the medieval period.
Kilwa Kisiwani grew into a major trading entrepot between the 11th and 16th centuries. The Great Mosque was enlarged and rebuilt in multiple phases during the 13th and 14th centuries as the town prospered from trade in gold, ivory and other goods. The site later declined after Portuguese and Omani shifts in regional control.
Positioned on Kilwa Kisiwani island off the southern Tanzanian coast, the mosque sits within the insular ruins area that faces the Indian Ocean and is accessed by boat from the mainland port of Kilwa Masoko.
- UNESCO site: Part of the Kilwa Kisiwani ruins, which are inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their significance in medieval Indian Ocean trade.
- Dating: Major construction and expansions of the mosque date from the 13th and 14th centuries, when Kilwa was a major Swahili trading port.
