Grays Peak Mountain
Colorado fourteener mountain and popular hiking summit
One of Colorado's fourteeners, Grays Peak draws hikers for its non-technical summit, high-alpine views along the Continental Divide and easy access from I‑70 corridors.
Grays Peak is a 14,278-foot (4,352 m) mountain in Colorado’s Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. It is classified as one of Colorado’s “fourteeners” and is a popular objective for hikers and scramblers.
A classic alpine hike and scramble, the summit offers broad high‑altitude views across the Continental Divide and surrounding ranges. The route involves tundra and rocky talus typical of Colorado fourteeners; many parties attempt Grays and the adjacent Torreys Peak on the same outing. The elevation gain to the summit makes this a strenuous day hike even for experienced walkers.
Named and mapped during 19th-century surveys of Colorado, the peak became a standard climbing objective as mountaineering and outdoor recreation expanded in the state. It has no developed facilities on the summit and is managed as part of public national forest lands.
The mountain rises in central Colorado along the I‑70 corridor of the Front Range, west of the Denver metropolitan area and within the high alpine landscape of Clear Creek and Summit county terrain.
- Weather and conditions: Summit sits above the alpine treeline so weather can change rapidly; be prepared for high‑altitude conditions and strong sun.
- Common route pairing: Often climbed together with neighbouring Torreys Peak, making a common ridge outing for hikers aiming for two
Tips for Visiting Grays Peak#
- Start before sunrise - Colorado 14ers commonly have afternoon thunderstorms and the Grays-Torreys route fills with hikers later in the day, so an early start gives better weather and far fewer people on the ridge.
- Use the common Stevens Gulch/Torreys-Grays trailhead (the established parking area for the two peaks) and plan to park early; many hikers combine Grays with Torreys in a single outing, so expect shared traffic at the lot.
- If you have the energy, continue along the short connecting saddle to Torreys Peak after Grays - many visitors stop at Grays and miss the broader summit views and different perspective back down the valley.
Best Time to Visit Grays Peak#
Best visited in late June through early September for summer hiking when the summit is most reliably snow-free.
