Grand-Place
Park Ornate historic square surrounded by guildhalls
Brussels’ Grand‑Place frames a cobbled square with gilded guildhalls and the Gothic Town Hall; tourists photograph the facades, visit nearby museums and attend periodic events like the flower carpet.
The Grand-Place is the central square of Brussels and the historic heart of the city. It is enclosed by the town hall, the King’s House and a cohesive ensemble of guildhall façades that form a richly ornamented urban square.
The square is famed for its decorative architecture and regular public events including flower displays, markets and seasonal illuminations. Visitors typically view the Gothic Town Hall, the Museum in the King’s House and the richly gilded guildhalls around the square.
Originally a medieval market place, the square was rebuilt after heavy damage during the 1695 bombardment and subsequently developed into its present baroque character. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998 in recognition of its historic and architectural value.
The Grand-Place sits in the centre of Brussels, a short walk from central transport hubs including Brussels Central Station.
- UNESCO inscription: The square was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998 for its architectural cohesion and historical importance.
- Flower carpet: A large decorative flower carpet is installed on the square every two years in August, attracting significant visitor numbers.
What to See #
- Town Hall: The Town Hall dominates one side of the square and dates from the early 15th century, featuring a tall Gothic belfry and richly decorated façades.
- King's House (Maison du Roi): The King's House or Broodhuis (Maison du Roi) faces the square and today houses the Museum of the City of Brussels with historic displays.
- Guildhalls: The surrounding guildhalls are ornate baroque and neo-gothic façades rebuilt after the 1695 bombardment and form the decorative perimeter of the square.
How to Get to Grand-Place #
Grand-Place is in the very centre of Brussels and is a short walk from Brussels Central (Gare Centrale) and De Brouckère. It is served by the city’s metro, tram and bus network, so arriving by train to Brussels-South (Midi) or Central and walking a few minutes will put you at the square.
Tips for Visiting Grand-Place #
- Visit at first light (before 9:00) or after sunset when day-trip tour groups have left - the square is far less crowded and you get better photos of the facades.
- Approach from one of the surrounding side streets (e.g., Rue Charles Buls or Rue du Marché aux Herbes) to avoid the biggest tour-group bottlenecks and to discover quieter angles of the guild houses.
- Don't miss the Brussels City Museum (Maison du Roi / Broodhuis) on the square - it houses the city's history and is easy to overlook when everyone is focused on the façades.
Best Time to Visit Grand-Place #
Late spring through early autumn is ideal for pleasant weather and the lively atmosphere of the square.
