Grand Mosque of Bursa

The Grand Mosque of Bursa (Ulu Cami) is a large Ottoman-era congregational mosque in central Bursa, Turkey, founded in the late 14th century and notable for its multiple-domed roof. It is one of the principal historic mosques in the early Ottoman capital.

The building’s most striking interior feature is the large, rectangular prayer hall covered by 20 closely spaced domes arranged in four rows. Visitors also note extensive examples of Islamic calligraphy on wooden panels and the central ablution fountain in the courtyard. The mosque’s scale and dense dome pattern make the interior acoustics and spatial impression distinct from single-dome Ottoman mosques.

Construction was completed at the end of the 14th century under Ottoman patronage and it served as Bursa’s principal congregational mosque. Over the centuries it has undergone restorations after fires and earthquakes but retains its basic multi-domed plan and Ottoman-era decorative elements.

The mosque sits in the historic heart of Bursa, within walking distance of the covered bazaar (Koza Han) and other early Ottoman buildings. Bursa lies on the southern shore of the Sea of Marmara, roughly 150 kilometers south of Istanbul by road.

• Timing: Best viewed in the morning light when interior calligraphic panels and stone surfaces are least crowded and photography is easiest.
• Crowds: Avoid Friday midday prayers if you want to tour the interior rather than attend services, as the mosque fills for the weekly Jummah service.
