Grand Mesa
Area Extensive Colorado mesa with lakes and forested plateau
A vast flat-topped mesa west of Grand Junction with dense aspen stands and more than 300 small lakes. People come for fishing, snowmobiling and summer hiking on forested trails and scenic overlooks.
Grand Mesa is a broad, flat-topped mountain plateau in western Colorado notable for its extensive basalt cap and high-elevation plateau. It is widely described as the largest flat-topped mountain in the world and rises prominently above surrounding valleys.
On the plateau visitors find hundreds of small lakes and ponds, extensive alpine and subalpine forests, and developed recreational facilities including fishing, hiking and a downhill ski area. The mesa’s summit area reaches roughly 11,332 feet in elevation and offers roads and trails that access lakes and viewpoints across the plateau.
Geologically the mesa was formed when late Tertiary basalt flows blanketed older rocks and protected the underlying strata from erosion, leaving a broad flat top. Land use has long combined forest management, recreation and local grazing, with designated roads and campgrounds concentrated on the plateau.
The mesa sits in western Colorado east of Grand Junction, forming a broad highland between the Colorado River valley and the Gunnison River watershed. It lies within national forest lands and is accessed by paved and gravel roads from surrounding towns.
- Superlative: Often described as the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, the feature is a broad basalt-capped plateau rather than a single peak.
- Recreation seasons: The mesa supports both summer recreation and a winter ski area, with widely dispersed campgrounds, trails and fishing on numerous small lakes.
What to See #
- Grand Mesa summit: The highest point on the mesa reaches about 11,332 feet above sea level and is commonly referred to as the Grand Mesa summit; the plateau is capped by a layer of basalt.
- Powderhorn Ski Area: A developed winter recreation area on the mesa's slopes offering downhill skiing and snow-based recreation, located on the mesa's north side.
- Plateau lakes: The plateau contains several hundred small lakes and ponds formed in depressions on the basalt cap; these provide fishing and shoreline access across the mesa.
