Grand Casemates Square is the principal public square at the north end of Main Street in Gibraltar, facing the harbour and the northern approach to the Rock. The open plaza occupies the site of former military casemates and serves as a civic and social focal point for the town.
The square is lined with eateries and outdoor seating and is commonly used for markets, concerts and seasonal celebrations. Its position gives direct access to the waterfront, nearby fortifications and the main pedestrian thoroughfare of Gibraltar.
Historically the site formed part of the Rock’s defensive and military infrastructure; the name reflects the casemate structures that once occupied the area and the square has been repurposed for public use over time.
The square sits at the northern edge of Gibraltar’s central commercial area, immediately north of Main Street and adjacent to the harbour and ferry/harbour facilities.
