Park Private gated Manhattan park with limited public access
A small gated square in Manhattan with restricted access; tourists photograph the surrounding 19th-century brownstones, sample nearby restaurants, and explore the Gramercy neighborhood’s quieter streets.
Gramercy Park is a private gated park in the Gramercy neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, created by developer Samuel Ruggles in 1831. The park is a small, enclosed garden that has remained privately controlled since its creation.
The central garden contains mature trees, ornamental planting and simple pathways and is enclosed by a fence; only residents and designated institutions holding keys may enter. The surrounding neighborhood is noted for its 19th-century rowhouses, historic clubs, and several well-known hotels and cultural institutions.
Samuel Ruggles laid out the park as part of a residential plan in 1831 and established the private ownership and access regime that continues to define the site. Over time the park has remained a distinctive example of a private urban green space in New York City.
Gramercy Park sits between East 20th and East 21st Streets in Manhattan, within easy walking distance of Union Square and the Flatiron District.
- Private access: Access to the central garden is restricted to keyholders; the public can view the park from the surrounding streets but cannot enter without a key.
- Size: Occupies roughly two acres as a fenced, private square garden at the heart of the Gramercy neighborhood.
