Palace Official seat of Finland's government in Helsinki
Facing Senate Square in Helsinki, the Government Palace houses Finland’s Council of State; tourists walk the square for its neoclassical facades and proximity to Helsinki Cathedral.
The Government Palace in Helsinki (Valtioneuvoston linna) is the official seat of Finland’s central government located on Senate Square in central Helsinki, Uusimaa. The building was constructed as part of the early 19th century Engel-designed ensemble around the square.
The exterior is a prominent example of neoclassical architecture and is typically viewed from Senate Square alongside the cathedral and university buildings; the palace contains working government offices including the Prime Minister’s Office and other ministerial rooms. The interior is a functioning administrative complex rather than a museum.
Designed by Carl Ludvig Engel and erected in the early 19th century as part of the Senate Square ensemble, the palace has housed central government functions since Finland’s period as an autonomous Grand Duchy of Russia and through independence. It has undergone maintenance and interior reorganisation to serve contemporary government needs.
The palace stands on Senate Square in central Helsinki, directly adjacent to Helsinki Cathedral and the University of Helsinki, and is in the historic core of the city.
- Visiting tips: Best external views are from Senate Square and the cathedral steps across the square; the palace houses active government offices and is not regularly open for public tours.
