Gough Island is a remote volcanic island in the South Atlantic that forms part of the Tristan da Cunha territory of the United Kingdom. It is internationally important for seabirds and for its largely intact island ecosystem.

The island supports large breeding populations of seabirds, including several albatross and petrel species, and is managed for conservation by teams who operate an on-island meteorological and research station. There are no permanent civilian settlements.

Gough Island has been the focus of conservation work to protect nesting seabirds from introduced predators and human impacts. The island’s isolation has preserved many native species but also makes it vulnerable to disturbance and marine pollution.

Geographically it lies in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 400 km southeast of the main Tristan da Cunha island group.

  • Wildlife and staffing: Designated for its globally important seabird colonies and largely uninhabited status, with a small staffed meteorological and conservation station present seasonally.
  • Access: Remote and rugged with no regular tourist facilities; landing is restricted and weather-dependent, so access is only by expedition or authorised scientific teams.

How to Get to Gough Island #

Gough Island is a remote island administered from Tristan da Cunha (part of the same territory). There is no airstrip; access is only by ship (research or supply voyages) and visits are infrequent and strictly regulated - landing requires permission and is weather dependent. It cannot be reached by commercial flights.

Tips for Visiting Gough Island #

  • Gough Island has no tourism infrastructure and landings are tightly controlled - visits are generally limited to authorised scientific or conservation expeditions organised through Tristan da Cunha authorities.
  • Sea voyages to Gough are long (typically from Cape Town) and weather can prevent landings; expect flexible schedules, strict biosecurity measures to protect seabird colonies, and no visitor facilities.

Best Time to Visit Gough Island #

Gough Island is typically visited (when permitted) in the southern summer months (November-March) when sea and weather conditions are comparatively less severe, though access is highly restricted.

Southern summer (easiest access)
November-March · ~8-15°C
Relatively milder seas and weather during the southern summer make ship visits and scientific work somewhat easier; the island is remote and access is very limited.
Southern winter
April-October · ~5-10°C
Colder, stormier conditions with strong winds and heavy seas; routine access is rare and weather is often rough.
