Gotō Rettō, the Goto Islands, are an archipelago in Nagasaki Prefecture off the western coast of Kyushu, Japan. The group comprises many islands, of which Fukue is the largest and main population and transport centre.
The islands are known for coastal scenery, fishing communities, and a cultural history that includes centuries-old Christian communities and historic churches. Marine environments around the islands support fishing and tourism activities such as diving and coastal cruising.
Transport infrastructure includes an airport on Fukue Island and regular ferry services that connect the archipelago with Nagasaki and other points on Kyushu. Local settlements are dispersed across the islands and visitor facilities are concentrated on the larger islands.
Geographically the archipelago lies in the East China Sea to the west of Kyushu and is administratively part of Nagasaki Prefecture.
- Christian Heritage: The archipelago has a long history of Christianity introduced centuries ago and contains historic churches and sites linked to the region's 'hidden Christian' communities.
- Transport Links: Fukue Island has an airport (Goto-Fukue Airport) and regular ferry services connecting the islands to Nagasaki and mainland Kyushu.
What to See #
- Fukue Island: Fukue Island, the largest island in the group and the main transport hub with the local airport and ferry connections.
- Naru Island: Naru Island, one of the inhabited islands with rural villages, historic sites and coastal scenery.
How to Get to Gotō Rettō #
Gotō Rettō (the Gotō Islands) are reached by air or sea: scheduled flights serve Gotō-Fukue Airport (Fukue Island) from Fukuoka and Nagasaki, and ferries connect Fukue and other islands with ports on Kyushu (Nagasaki/Sasebo). After arriving on Fukue or another island, use local ferries or a rental car/taxi to move between islands and to coastal towns and ports.
Tips for Visiting Gotō Rettō #
- Use Fukue (Gotō-Fukue) as your main gateway-there are regular flights to Fukue Airport and ferry connections from Nagasaki-then hop local ferries or flights to the other islands.
- Plan visits outside peak typhoon season (summer-early autumn) and book inter-island ferries or flights in advance, as services can be limited and fill up quickly.
- Don't just stick to beaches: allocate time for island churches and local culture (the Gotōs have distinctive hidden-Christian sites and rural villages) and arrange a rental car or scooter on the main islands to reach them.
Best Time to Visit Gotō Rettō #
Visit the Gotō Islands in spring or early autumn for mild weather and fewer storms; summer is hot and typhoon-prone.
