Gothenburg Museum of Art

Gothenburg Museum of Art is the municipal art museum in Gothenburg, Sweden, located on the raised public square Götaplatsen. The present museum building opened in 1923 and forms a major cultural landmark at the top of the city’s main boulevard.

The museum is known for a large collection of Nordic art from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including works by Swedish painters such as Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn, plus rotating international exhibitions. The complex also includes the Hasselblad Centre for photography and several temporary exhibition galleries.

The collection grew from civic acquisitions and donations through the late 19th and early 20th centuries; the current building consolidated those holdings when it opened in 1923. The Hasselblad Centre was added later to host photography exhibitions and prizes.

The museum sits at Götaplatsen at the head of Kungsportsavenyen in central Gothenburg, adjacent to the city theatre and concert hall. It is within easy walking distance of the city centre and main tram lines.
