Götaplatsen

Götaplatsen is the principal public square and cultural hub in central Gothenburg, Sweden, located at the upper end of the city’s main avenue. It functions as the city’s main stage for visual arts, music and theatre.

The square’s most recognisable feature is the bronze fountain statue Poseidon by Carl Milles, and the square is flanked by the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Concert Hall and the City Theatre. These institutions make the square a concentrated cultural quarter for exhibitions, concerts and performances.

Götaplatsen was developed in the early 20th century as Gothenburg expanded and formalised its main boulevard; since then it has served as a focal point for civic events and festivals.

The square sits at the top of Kungsportsavenyn in central Gothenburg, within easy walking distance of the central station and the city’s main shopping streets.
