Gorgona (Italy)

Gorgona is a small island in the Tuscan Archipelago off the coast of Tuscany, Italy. It is notable for hosting an operational penal colony alongside limited civilian settlement and agricultural activity.

The island has Mediterranean vegetation, coastal cliffs and small cultivated plots used in part by the penal colony for farming and artisanal production. Visitor access to the island is restricted and typically requires authorization due to the presence of the penitentiary.
