The Gold Coast is a 50-kilometre strip of surf beaches and high-rises in south-east Queensland, with a sporty, outdoor lifestyle, a rainforest hinterland, and a growing community of remote workers in laid-back Burleigh Heads. It is a little cheaper than Sydney, with sun most of the year.

It is car-friendly rather than walkable, with limited culture, and its time zone is hard for US and European teams. This guide covers what you need to set up for a month or more. For sights as a visitor, see the Gold Coast travel guide.

Why the Gold Coast Works for Remote Workers#

  • Surf. Snapper Rocks, Burleigh, Kirra and beginner beaches all along the coast.
  • Outdoors. Rainforest hikes in Springbrook and Lamington, and beach runs every morning.
  • Sunshine. Mild winters and long summers.
  • Burleigh’s community. Cafes, coworking and a creative crowd.
  • Brisbane nearby. About an hour by car or train.

Who It Suits (and Who It Doesn't)#

The Gold Coast suits surfers, beach and fitness lovers who want a relaxed Australian base. It suits you less if you want culture, nightlife beyond Surfers Paradise or good public transport away from the coast, or if you work US or European hours.

Visas#

Australia has no digital nomad visa. US, Canadian, Japanese and some other citizens apply for an ETA (subclass 601) through the AustralianETA app; EU and other European citizens, including British citizens, can apply for a free eVisitor (subclass 651). Both are valid for 12 months with multiple entries, allowing stays of up to three months each time you enter. Visitors may not work for Australian businesses, and the rules do not clearly cover long periods of remote work for overseas employers, so check the Department of Home Affairs’ current guidance. Young people from many countries can apply for a Working Holiday visa (usually aged 18 to 30, or up to 35 for some nationalities), which allows a stay of a year or more and local work.

Internet and SIM Cards#

Home internet runs on the NBN, often 50 to 100 Mbps. Mobile 5G is good along the coast. Prepaid SIMs are easy to buy.

Getting Around#

The G:link light rail runs along the coast from Helensvale through Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach, with an extension south towards Burleigh Heads. Buses fill the gaps, and trains link Helensvale with Brisbane. A car is useful for the hinterland. Gold Coast Airport is in Coolangatta, at the southern end.

Weather and When to Go#

April to October is the best time: warm, dry and sunny. November to March is hot and humid, with summer storms; it is also the busiest season.

Community and Meeting People#

Coworking events, surf clubs, run clubs, beach volleyball and Gold Coast newcomer groups are the easiest ways in.

Health and Safety#

The Gold Coast is safe. The main risks are the sun and rip currents: always swim between the flags. Healthcare is excellent; carry health insurance.
