Goecha La Trail

Classic 9-10 day trek from Yuksom to the Goecha La viewpoint beneath Kanchenjunga in Sikkim.

Time to Hike: 9-10 days covering roughly 90 km with daily stages of 4-8 hours. The route gains sustained altitude with high camps close to the final viewpoint, so allow a spare day for weather or acclimatisation.

Best Time to Go: Spring (April to May) and autumn (October to November) offer the most reliable views and stable trails; rhododendrons bloom in spring for spectacular colours.

Getting there: Fly or train to Bagdogra / Siliguri then take a road transfer to Yuksom, the usual trailhead. Most parties walk in from Yuksom and return the same way.

Costs: Expect modest local costs for food and basic accommodation at the start, plus mandatory permits and fees and payment for a licensed guide and porters or an organised group. High camps are usually tented and run by agencies.

Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous: well-marked trails but long days, steep sections, loose scree and river crossings. Altitude is the main hazard - the viewpoint sits near 5,000 m - so AMS risk and fast weather changes are real concerns.

The Goecha La route climbs from Yuksom through dense rhododendron and fir forests into open alpine meadows and rocky high valleys. The approach frames the south face of Kanchenjunga, giving sustained, dramatic views as you gain elevation, with memorable sunrise panoramas from the final viewpoint.

Accommodation shifts from simple guesthouses and tea shops in villages to organised tented camps higher on the trail. The trek is notable for its relatively direct access to big Himalayan scenery without technical climbing, and for the floral displays and varied landscapes along the way.

The nearest air link is Bagdogra airport, with road connections via Siliguri to western Sikkim. From there arrange a taxi or shared vehicle to Yuksom, the established trailhead; the road transfer is the common start for organised and independent groups.

Most walkers set off from Yuksom and follow the standard route northwards to the high camps and the Goecha La viewpoint, then return to Yuksom by the same trail.

Aim for spring (April-May) or autumn (October-November) when visibility is best and weather is more stable. Summer monsoon often makes trails slippery and obscures views, and winter brings heavy snow that can close the high pass.

Permits and local registrations are required for trekking in Sikkim; these are typically handled by licensed local agencies or the guesthouse in Yuksom. Book guides, tented camps and permits well in advance for peak months, and be prepared for rapid weather changes at altitude.
