Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological area in Azerbaijan noted for its prehistoric rock engravings and mud volcanoes. The site was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2007 for its exceptional collection of petroglyphs.
The site contains more than 6,000 rock engravings carved on rocky outcrops across a wide semi-arid plain, showing hunting scenes, human figures and boats. Several active mud volcanoes and natural gas seeps lie within the landscape and are visible from the main trails. An on-site museum and marked paths allow visitors to view major panels and learn about excavation finds.
Rock carvings accumulated over many millennia, with panels attributed to periods from the Upper Paleolithic through the Bronze Age and later. Archaeological surveys and systematic recording began in the 20th century and the area gained international protection with its 2007 UNESCO inscription.
The complex sits on the Absheron Peninsula, roughly south-west of central Baku, in a dry rocky steppe setting near the Caspian coast. The site is accessed by road from Baku and neighbouring settlements.
