Giza pyramid complex
Archaeological Site Ancient funerary complex with pyramids and Sphinx
The Giza plateau outside Cairo hosts the Great Pyramid of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the Sphinx and associated tombs. Tourists explore pyramid exteriors, nearby museums and organized tours offering camel or jeep rides.
The Giza pyramid complex is a Late Fourth Dynasty funerary complex on the Giza Plateau on the outskirts of Cairo, Egypt, and includes the three large pyramids built around the 26th century BCE and the Great Sphinx.
The site contains three major pyramids, numerous smaller mastabas, and the Great Sphinx; the largest pyramid originally reached about 146.6 m in height. Many visitors view the three main pyramids in a single sweep from the western plateau and visit the Solar Boat Museum beside the Great Pyramid to see the reconstructed Khufu boat.
Guided tours commonly combine the plateau with close-up views of the Sphinx, entry into at least one pyramid interior on permit, and panoramic vantage points from the nearby plateau for photography at sunrise or sunset.
The three principal pyramids were built during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty for Pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. Constructed as monumental tombs and mortuary complexes, the structures and surrounding necropolis were altered over millennia by quarrying, reuse of stone, and archaeological excavation from the 19th century onward.
The complex sits on the Giza Plateau immediately west of the Nile and the suburb of Giza, roughly 20 km southwest of central Cairo and visible from much of Greater Cairo.
- Visiting times: Best light and fewer crowds occur early morning or late afternoon; heat and sun can be intense during summer months.
- Tickets and access: Ticketing separates access to the plateau, pyramid interiors, and the Solar Boat Museum, so plan purchases accordingly to see internal chambers.
What to See #
- Great Pyramid (Khufu): The largest of the tombs on the plateau, built for Pharaoh Khufu in the Fourth Dynasty around 2560 BCE; original height about 146.6 m with a present height of about 138.8 m, internal passages and three known chambers including the King's Chamber.
- Pyramid of Khafre: Built for Pharaoh Khafre, appearing taller because it stands on higher ground; includes a mortuary complex and originally rose to roughly 136 m.
- Pyramid of Menkaure: The smallest of the three main Giza pyramids, built for Pharaoh Menkaure and standing at about 65 m originally, accompanied by smaller satellite pyramids.
- Great Sphinx: A limestone statue with a human face and a lion's body sitting on the east side of the plateau, approximately 73 m long and 20 m high, associated with the Khafre complex.
- Solar Boat Museum: A purpose-built museum at the base of the Great Pyramid that houses the reconstructed Khufu solar boat and related finds from the Khufu funerary complex.
