Giza Plateau
Archaeological Site Archaeological plateau housing Egypt's Giza pyramids and Sphinx
Desert plateau on Cairo’s outskirts hosting the Great Pyramids, the Sphinx and adjacent mastaba tombs. Tourists come for guided pyramid visits, sunrise or sunset photo shoots and Egyptological sites.
The Giza Plateau is the flat limestone plateau on the outskirts of Cairo in Egypt that contains the Giza pyramid complex, including the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Great Sphinx, and has been a major archaeological and tourist site since antiquity.
The plateau’s principal attractions are the three main pyramids - Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure - and the stone monument of the Great Sphinx; the Great Pyramid originally stood about 146.6 m tall with a base of about 230.4 m per side. The complex also contains funerary temples, causeways, workers’ cemeteries and the Solar Boat Museum, which displays the reconstructed wooden boat associated with Khufu.
Many visitors combine close-up views of the monuments with panoramic viewpoints on the plateau that provide framed vistas of the pyramids against the Cairo urban backdrop, and guided tours interpret the architecture and burial functions of the site.
The major monuments were constructed during Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, roughly around 2600-2500 BC, as royal funerary complexes for pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure. The site continued to be visited, modified and studied through later Egyptian periods, the medieval era and into modern archaeological campaigns beginning in the 19th century.
The plateau sits on the west bank of the Nile adjacent to the city of Giza and on the western edge of greater Cairo, accessible by road from central Cairo and Giza and located within the Giza Governorate.
- Best light for photography: Photographers favour sunrise for east-facing shots of the pyramids and late afternoon for warm light and long shadows across the plateau.
- Tickets and access: Separate tickets are usually required for general entry to the plateau and for entry into individual pyramids or the Sphinx enclosure, and opening hours can vary seasonally.
What to See #
- Great Pyramid (Khufu): The Great Pyramid of Khufu on the plateau is the largest, with an original height of about 146.6 m and a square base roughly 230.4 m per side, built in the Fourth Dynasty ca. 2600 BC.
- Khafre and Menkaure pyramids: The Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure form the primary pyramid group alongside Khufu and are lower in height but part of the same funerary complex from the Fourth Dynasty.
- Great Sphinx: The Great Sphinx, a limestone statue roughly 73 m long, sits on the plateau in front of the Khafre complex and is one of the site's most recognisable monuments.
- Solar Boat Museum: The Solar Boat Museum houses the reconstructed wooden funerary boat recovered from a pit beside the Great Pyramid; it is displayed in an enclosed museum near the pyramid complex.
How to Get to Giza Plateau #
From central Cairo, drive west on Pyramids Road/Al Haram Street toward the Giza Plateau; it’s roughly a 20 km drive from downtown (Tahrir/Plaza area) and typically takes 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. The main vehicle entrance is reached from the service road alongside Al Haram.
By public transport take Cairo Metro Line 2 to Giza station, then a short taxi or local microbus ride (about 10-15 minutes) along Al Haram Road to the visitor entrance. Numerous tourist buses and shared minibuses also run the Al Haram/Pyramids route.
Tips for Visiting Giza Plateau #
- Visit first thing in the morning (before most tour buses arrive) for cooler temperatures, softer light for photos and far fewer crowds; late afternoon can also be good but is often busier.
- Use the official visitor entrance at the Plateau Visitor Centre/parking on the southern side of the complex; if you plan to go inside the Great Pyramid buy that separate ticket at the counters early (entrance numbers are limited).
- Allow time to see the Solar Boat Museum beside Khufu's pyramid - the reconstructed solar boat is immediately adjacent to the main pyramid complex and is commonly skipped by brief visits.
- Be prepared for persistent camel/horse/tout approaches near the car park and Sphinx area: agree any ride price up front and keep an eye on belongings, and expect standard security checks at the entrance.
Best Time to Visit Giza Plateau #
Visit in autumn through spring (roughly October-April) to avoid the intense summer heat and have more comfortable conditions for exploring the site.
