Giza Necropolis
Archaeological Site Ancient funerary complex including pyramids and Great Sphinx
Archaeological layers around Giza Necropolis include the three main pyramids, workers’ cemeteries and the Sphinx; visitors explore excavation sites, museums and panoramic views of Cairo.
The Giza Necropolis is the funerary complex on the Giza Plateau west of the Nile that contains major Old Kingdom monuments including the three great pyramids and the Great Sphinx, dating to the Fourth Dynasty (c. 26th century BCE).
The necropolis comprises the principal royal pyramids, subsidiary smaller pyramids and mastaba tombs for nobles, plus remains of workers’ settlements and quarrying activities. The arrangement of pyramids and associated mortuary temples is visible across the plateau and from adjacent viewing points.
Constructed during the Fourth Dynasty for pharaohs Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, the necropolis functioned as the primary royal burial and mortuary landscape. Over centuries the site was subject to reuse, stone robbing and study by antiquarians and archaeologists, resulting in the layered remains seen today.
The necropolis sits on the Giza Plateau on the western outskirts of Cairo, within Giza Governorate and approximately 20 km southwest of central Cairo.
- Archaeological context: The site is archaeologically complex; many surrounding features are not obvious from a single visit, so guided tours provide context for the wider necropolis.
