Giudecca is a long island immediately south of central Venice, separated from the main city by the Giudecca Canal and forming part of the Venice municipality. It is known for a mix of residential streets, historic churches and former industrial buildings.
The island’s most prominent landmarks are the Palladian church of Il Redentore, consecrated in 1592, and the large riverside mill complex known as Molino Stucky, a late 19th century neo-Gothic industrial building converted for modern use. The Giudecca waterfront offers direct views across the Giudecca Canal to San Marco and the Doge’s Palace.
Giudecca developed as part of Venice’s expansion and hosted workshops, shipyards and later mills and factories. Many industrial buildings were adapted or restored in the 20th and 21st centuries, shifting the island toward mixed residential and tourist uses while retaining working neighborhoods.
The island lies across the Giudecca Canal from Piazza San Marco in central Venice, connected by regular waterbus services and water taxis. It forms a southern edge to the historic city and has quayfronts along the canal and quieter lanes inland.
- Getting there: Served by multiple vaporetto lines; a short waterbus ride across the Giudecca Canal from central Venice makes it an easy half-day visit.
What to See #
- Il Redentore & Molino Stucky: A compact ensemble of notable sites on the island including a large Palladian church consecrated in 1592 and a late 19th century neo-Gothic mill complex later repurposed for hotel and conference use.
How to Get to Giudecca #
Giudecca is a short vaporetto ride from Venice proper. Take ACTV vaporetto Line 2 or other routes from Piazza San Marco, Tronchetto or Zattere and disembark at Giudecca stops such as Palanca or Zitelle.
Tips for Visiting Giudecca #
- Take the vaporetto line 2 (from Piazzale Roma or the Accademia) and disembark at Giudecca for a loop walk with views of the Zattere and the Doge's Palace across the canal.
- Explore the Fondamenta della Zattere promenade on the mainland side for gelato and a slower view of the island's churches and shipyards.
- Visit the red‑brick Molino Stucky (now a hotel) for views; Giudecca's industrial past is visible in warehouses and boatyards.
Best Time to Visit Giudecca #
Giudecca is enjoyable in spring and autumn when temperatures are pleasant and the island is less crowded than central Venice.
