Gistola is a mountain peak in the Greater Caucasus mountain range in Georgia’s highland region, known for steep faces and permanent icefields. It is one of several high summits in the Svaneti and Khevsureti sectors of the central Caucasus.
The mountain is primarily of interest to experienced mountaineers because of its steep slopes, glaciation and alpine conditions rather than to casual tourists. Routes to the peak require technical climbing skills and alpine equipment.
Gistola stands within the high Caucasus massif and is part of the mountainous landscape of northern Georgia, which is characterised by deep valleys and snow-covered summits. The peak is accessed from remote highland valleys and forms part of the regional alpine terrain.

How to Get to Gistola #
Gistola is a high peak in the Greater Caucasus (Svaneti region) on the Georgia-Russia border and is approached only on foot as a mountaineering route. The usual access to the Svaneti area is via the regional road to Mestia; from there reaching trailheads typically requires a 4x4 track and then multi‑day trekking or a guided climbing expedition. There are no public roads to the summit and technical climbing experience or a licensed mountain guide is recommended.

High-mountain Gistola is best visited in midsummer (July-September) when conditions for approaches and climbs are most stable, though high-altitude areas remain cold.
