Gir National Park
National Park Last refuge of the Asiatic lion in India
Home to the last wild Asiatic lions, Gir National Park in Gujarat mixes dry forest, scrub and acacia; safaris attract wildlife enthusiasts seeking lions, deer, birds and conservation-focused visits.
Gir National Park in Gujarat is a protected forest and savannah landscape that preserves the last self-sustaining wild population of Asiatic lions. The park and surrounding sanctuary areas combine dry deciduous woods, grasslands and rocky outcrops across a mosaic of protected compartments.
Visitors travel on regulated safaris to see wildlife including lions, several deer species, leopards and diverse birdlife; the park operates timed jeep safaris and small-zone management to reduce disturbance. Conservation programs and habitat management have been central to the park’s operation since mid-20th century protection efforts.
The protected area was established in the 20th century to safeguard the remaining Asiatic lion population and has since been managed under wildlife conservation frameworks; it is administered from towns at the park’s edge and includes smaller fenced enclosures used for specific management and detection.
Gir lies in southwestern Gujarat near the Saurashtra peninsula, with the town of Sasan Gir serving as a common gateway for visitors and conservation staff.
- Asiatic lions: The park is the only natural habitat supporting a free-ranging population of Asiatic (Indian) lions; conservation management and regulated safaris are in place to protect them.
- Visiting tips: Best viewing for wildlife is typically on early morning and late afternoon safaris; park entry and vehicle permits are required and should be booked in advance during peak season (October to June).
What to See #
- Devalia Safari Park: Devalia or Devaliya Safari Park - a small fenced reserve on the edge of the national park where visitors often see lions and other wildlife on guided drives.
- Sasan Gir: Sasan Gir - the principal entry point and nearby town used as a base for park safaris and administration of the protected area.
How to Get to Gir National Park #
Gir National Park’s main access is via the village/town of Sasan Gir. Visitors typically reach Sasan Gir by road from nearby regional centres (for example Junagadh or Somnath) using state-run or private buses or by car; the park’s safari gates and the forest department reservation office are based at Sasan Gir, from which guided jeep safaris depart. Walking inside the protected forest is restricted, so plan to join an authorised jeep safari from Sasan Gir village.
Tips for Visiting Gir National Park #
- Book your jeep safari (forest department or authorised operator) well in advance and choose a morning slot - early drives significantly increase the chance of spotting Asiatic lions when they are active.
- Aim for smaller concessions or less-popular ranges and ask your driver about waterholes and recent sightings; guests who rely only on the main, busiest circuits often miss the quieter areas where sightings are more likely.
- Combine a vehicle safari with a short guided walk in buffer-zone areas or visits to Gir interpretation centres to learn about lion behaviour and conservation - many visitors only do one jeep run and miss the broader context.
