Gifu Castle
Castle Hilltop Japanese castle offering panoramic views over Gifu
Above the Nagara River plain, Gifu Castle sits atop Mount Kinka (reconstructed) with a museum inside and panoramic views; visitors reach it by ropeway or hike and explore samurai exhibits and city vistas.
Gifu Castle is a Japanese castle perched on Mount Kinka above central Gifu City in Gifu Prefecture. The castle site is associated with the Sengoku period and the visible keep is a modern reconstruction housing a local history museum.
The castle’s observation level offers panoramic views across Gifu City and the Nagara River; the summit sits 329 meters above sea level. Access is by the Mount Kinka Ropeway from Gifu Park or by several footpaths that climb the mountain, and the keep contains displays of armor, weapons, and models that explain local military history.
The castle was made a regional stronghold in the 16th century when Oda Nobunaga used the site as a power base after capturing the mountain fortress, which had earlier medieval origins. The original mountain fortifications fell into ruin in the early 17th century and the present keep is a 20th century concrete reconstruction intended as a museum and viewpoint.
The site stands above central Gifu City on Mount Kinka, immediately adjacent to Gifu Park and overlooking the Nagara River. It lies in Gifu Prefecture on the main island of Honshu, roughly a short drive north of Nagoya.
- Ropeway: The Mount Kinka Ropeway links Gifu Park to the castle summit and provides the fastest access to the keep and observation areas.
- Summit elevation: The castle sits on Mount Kinka whose summit is 329 meters above sea level, giving clear views over central Gifu and the Nagara River.
What to See #
- Main keep (reconstruction): Located at the summit of Mount Kinka, this reconstructed keep contains exhibits on the castle's history, displays of armor and weapons, and an observation level with 360 degree views over Gifu City and the Nagara River.
- Gifu Park: A public green space at the mountain's base that contains the ropeway station and access points for multiple hiking trails leading to the summit.
- Mount Kinka hiking trails: Marked footpaths that climb Mount Kinka to the castle; routes vary in steepness and can be used instead of the ropeway for a roughly 20- to 40-minute ascent depending on pace.
